Invoicing Software 2026: Comparison and Electronic Invoicing

September 30, 2026

As of September 1, 2026, all businesses must be able to receive electronic invoices. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), very small businesses, and micro-enterprises will also be required to issue them starting September 1, 2027. Choosing an invoicing software solution therefore now comes down to two questions: Does it handle your quotes, invoices, and payment reminders, and is it connected to a government-approved platform?

This comparison features 9 software programs, their prices, their free or trial offers, and their status regarding the reform. Prices were recorded on September 28, 2026, from the publishers’ pricing pages; unless otherwise noted, they are exclusive of tax and per month.

Electronic Invoicing: What's Changing in 2026 and 2027

An approved platform (formerly PDP) is a state-registered operator that issues, transmits, and receives electronic invoices. Permanent registration is granted only after successful interoperability testing. Software can also be a compatible solution: it is not itself an accredited platform, but connects to one. The DGFiP publishes the official list of accredited platforms.

The public invoicing portal no longer serves as a free platform for issuing invoices; it has been refocused on the business directory and data collection. To issue and receive electronic invoices, a business must therefore use an approved platform, either directly or through its software.

How to Choose Invoicing Software in 2026?

1. Check its status regarding the reform

Ask whether the software itself is an approved platform or a compatible solution, and if it is the latter, which platform it connects to. Then check the name in the DGFiP’s official list. There are two official logos: “approved platform” and “compatible solution.”

2. Start with your volume and status

A micro-entrepreneur who issues just a few invoices a month doesn’t have the same needs as an SME with multiple users. Take a look at the limits of the entry-level plans: number of customers, number of invoices per year, and number of users.

3. Compare the cost over the course of a year

Compare list prices rather than promotions, which expire, and distinguish between monthly payments and annual commitments. For offers billed per user, calculate the cost based on the actual number of people who will be billed.

4. Check what's related to billing

Some software only handles invoicing, while others add accounting, bank reconciliation, cash management, or customer relationship management. A tool that combines these functions avoids duplicate data entry but is generally more expensive. If customer relationship management is more important than invoicing, start with our CRM software comparison .

Frequently Asked Questions About Billing Software

Can free invoicing software comply with the reform?

Several software programs in this comparison offer a free plan (Abby, Tiime, Henrri, Shine Facture) and are either certified platforms or linked to one. Make sure the free plan actually includes sending and receiving electronic invoices, and check its limitations.

I'm a micro-entrepreneur exempt from VAT—does this apply to me?

Yes. You must be able to receive electronic invoices starting September 1, 2026, and issue them starting September 1, 2027.

Is a PDF invoice sent by email still valid?

A PDF invoice sent by email is not an electronic invoice as defined by the reform. It remains an option as long as the requirement to issue electronic invoices does not apply to your business—that is, until September 1, 2027, for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and micro-enterprises.

Should you choose an accredited platform right now?

Yes, for receiving invoices: As of September 1, 2026, all businesses must be able to receive electronic invoices from their suppliers, which requires the use of an approved platform. For issuing invoices, an SME has until September 1, 2027, but may begin sooner.

How can you verify that a software program is linked to an approved platform?

Consult the official list published by the DGFiP on impots.gouv.fr. If the software is a compatible solution, ask the publisher for the name of the approved platform it uses and verify it on this list.

How much does invoicing software cost?

Several providers offer a limited free plan. The paid plans included in this comparison range from €3.90 per month (Sellsy’s TeamSystem Facture plan for freelancers) to €97 per month (excluding tax) for a suite that combines invoicing, customer relationship management, and accounting.

Find an invoice, whether received or issued

Under the reform, invoices are processed through approved platforms, but the related documents remain scattered: purchase orders in emails, contracts on a file server, and correspondence with the accountant in messaging apps.

Outmind indexes these sources and allows users to search for a document based on its content—for example, by a supplier’s name or an order number—while respecting each user’s access rights.
